“… this autobiography is essential reading, not only for its direct narrative but also for the deeper meanings that can be discerned between the lines. The author deserves praise for his work, though there is even more to uncover.”

— From the Foreword by
Dato’ Mahadev Shankar
Former Court of Appeal Judge

This book follows the life and professional path of a Malaysian legal practitioner born in Kuala Lumpur shortly after the Second World War. He grew up during a challenging period when the 1948 insurgency threatened the stability of the newly formed Federation of Malaya. Trained as a barrister-at-law, later serving as corporate legal counsel, and eventually appointed as a judge in Fiji, David Alfred recounts his experiences during the Emergency including his father’s encounters with armed insurgents and his own frightening experience of coming under gunfire and witnessing the aftermath of violence.

He was in primary school when Malaya gained independence in 1957 and in secondary school when Malaysia was formed in 1963. He also experienced the Confrontation period. As a law student in London, he witnessed the decline of the British Empire. His reflections offer a distinctive glimpse into post-war Malaya and personal insights into Malaysia’s early nation-building years.

Through engaging storytelling, David Alfred shares his journey as a practising advocate in Malaysian courts, his service as legal adviser to two prominent banks in Kuala Lumpur, and ultimately his appointment to the judiciary in Fiji.

This memoir presents a thoughtful account of practising law, providing legal counsel, and ultimately upholding justice in accordance with the Rule of Law. A compelling read for the legal fraternity, it offers valuable perspectives on Malaysia’s legal heritage and a rare insight into judicial life in Fiji.
